Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

Hello,

I have two error messages at boot, and I don't know how to get rid of them:

"Failed to start Load kernel modules"
and
"Failed to start Setup virtual console"

Could anyone help me?

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

always the first step is: search the journal for errors

journalctl -p err

it seems there are two services involved and to find thy:

systemctl --failed

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

I have a similar error with systemd-modules-load that I never managed to workaround in the past.

Following the guide brikler linked, I found that the error in my case is caused from the vboxnetflt module, which is included in /usr/lib/modules-load.d/virtualbox-host-dkms.conf.

I found some related info here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … el_modules

It seems like these modules on Arch are provided by the package virtualbox-host-modules-arch. I can't find anything related in /usr/lib/modules/extramodules-4.8-CHAKRA/.

I tried manually loading the module without success. No idea how to proceed.

doesn't "modprobe <options><module>" work for you?

man systemd-modules-load.service
-------------------
  modules-load=, rd.modules-load=
Takes a comma-separated list of kernel modules to statically load during early
boot. The option prefixed with "rd." is read by the initial RAM disk only.
 man modules-load.d
----------------
       Example 1. /etc/modules-load.d/virtio-net.conf example:

           # Load virtio-net.ko at boot
           virtio-net

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

I get this

[tetris4@lappy ~]$ sudo modprobe vboxnetflt
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxnetflt': Invalid argument

Am not sure exactly where the service picks up this module from, as I can't find any conf files for it.

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

for the conf files you should search /usr/lib/modules-load.d/ the modules should be in /usr/lib/modules

#/usr/lib/modules-load.d/virtualbox-host-dkms.conf
-----------------
vboxdrv
vboxpci
vboxnetadp
vboxnetflt

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

Yeah I found those as mentioned in my previous post. The issue is, what reads from that dir? Cause it isn't mentioned in the documentation.

@Frosch I guess you could try removing them from the file and running the virtualboxsetup again?

Re: Failed to start "Load kernel modules" and "Setup virtual console"

I recently switched from bumblebee+nvidia to prime+nouveau and no longer get those errors during boot. So I suspect this is related to one of those packages.
